Sharps Disposal Program

Local residents who use needles, syringes or lancets in their homes can properly dispose of them by driving to Crouse Hospital's emergency department entrance at 736 Irving Avenue in Syracuse. Every second Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon, a security guard or healthcare professional posted at the entrance will accept and correctly dispose of the sharps, and will provide a free sharps container for the next time.

Thousands of people in Onondaga County and surrounding areas have diabetes, cancer and other medical conditions requiring injections at home. Disposal of household sharps can be problematic. This program makes safe disposal of these items easier, and it will help keep sharps out of the curbside trash.

Residents bringing in sharps should bring them in rigid, puncture resistant containers, secured and sealed with a screw top or heavy packing tape and labeled "contains sharps."

IMPORTANT NOTE: This disposal service is NOT a needle exchange program, since the hospital will not provide replacement needles to anyone at anytime. Household sharps, including needles, syringes and lancets, are the only form of medical waste Crouse Hospital is accepting from the community. Those in the community who use household sharps are not required, but are encouraged, to participate in this sharps disposal program. Crouse Hospital may announce additional sharps disposal locations in the future.
