On Christmas Day 2010, Melissa Massey, RN, gave birth to triplets at Crouse Hospital. Upon their birth, the babies were admitted to Crouse Hospital's Baker Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and were patients in the unit for a few weeks. Today, the triplets Hannah, Thomas and Morgan, shown here with big sister Ava, who turned five in September, are healthy and doing well. The Massey family resides in West Winfield, NY.
As a way to show their gratitude for the care their two daughters and son received at Crouse, Dan Massey, last fall, began training for the 26.2 mile Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2013 - clocking about 525 miles while training for 16 weeks!
Dan, an industrial mechanic, ran the marathon with Joseph Miller Jr. They went to high school together and have been friends for more than 20 years. Joe is a captain in the U.S. Air Force, and he and his wife, Gale, have two children, Sierra and Austin. Joe raised money in memory of his father and his love for children. The Disney Marathon was Dan's fourth and Joe's third full marathon. Dan and Joe were sponsored by a local business, Upstate Spray Foam Insulation, which provided running shirts for training and racing. One-hundred percent of the proceeds raised were donated directly to the Baker NICU. All the marathon fees, travel expenses, rooms and shoes (they each went thru a couple of pairs each) were all out-of-pocket, paid by Dan and Joe to increase donations.
We thank Dan and Joe for this incredible venture on behalf of the Baker NICU. For more information about Massey's Marathon, please contact Phyllis Devlin at 315/470-7008. You are invited to make a donation in honor of Massey's Marathon.
Updates from Dan Massey
Update on Jan. 14, 2013: Joe and I finished the Walt Disney World marathon yesterday. Due to very warm temperatures and recent illness, our time goal wasn't met. We did finish and are proud of the money we raised (more than $1,400). We are going to keep the Facebook page up for a bit longer for some late donations as well. Thank you all so much for all the well wishes and for supporting us during this journey. Crouse is a first-class organization and we were honored to help if only in our little way.
Update on Dec. 25, 2012: Merry Christmas from Joe and Dan. Thinking about the little ones who are in the NICU as we speak. Hoping they are home and healthy soon and we are thankful for all your support that is helping them as well.
Update on Dec. 8, 2012: We ended this week with an 18-mile run on Saturday. Weather was great and our spirits are high. A 20-miler awaits and we are focused on the race. Lets hope our old bodies hold up for a few more weeks.
Update on Dec. 8, 2012: We finished the week with our 16-mile long run that went pretty well. Eleven weeks of training had taken its toll on both of us and Joe had a bit of the flu last week. This made us replan our last few weeks and hopefully it all works out well and we finish healthy and happy. We have four more tough weeks and four more long ( hilly) runs.
Update on Nov. 2, 2012: Dan reports that he and Joe are one quarter of the way through training, four weeks out of a total of 16. They've run 111 miles in 17 hours and 58 minutes, which is around a 9:48 pace per mile, right on track for their program. And get this: Dan and Joe have burned more than 16,000 calories each, equal to about 4.5 pounds. Way to go, guys!
