Giving to Crouse

give-foundation-giving

Philanthropic support is crucial to Crouse Hospital's ongoing ability to fulfill its mission of providing the best in patient care and promoting community health. Through the Foundation, individuals, corporations and other community organizations can show their support of Crouse services, programs and initiatives through the following giving options.

General Giving

General, unrestricted gifts to the Crouse Health Foundation in any amount are encouraged since they provide the greatest flexibility to use donations where and when they are needed most. Donations may be made through one gift or a series of gifts pledged over time.

Donors may restrict charitable gifts to a specific Crouse Hospital department or service, or earmark monies for the Crouse Health Foundation Endowment Fund.

Commemorative gifts not only show you care, but they help the Crouse community in a very meaningful way. All donors receive a thank you letter, and an acknowledgment is sent to the person (or person's family) on whose behalf you have made your gift (the amount of your gift will not be disclosed).

Capital Campaigns

To deliver the level of care the Central New York community has come to expect from Crouse Hospital, the Foundation conducts strategic capital campaigns — for the most sophisticated equipment to the new Witting Surgical Center currently under construction.

Operation: Innovation
Operation-Innovation

Crouse Hospital is a regional leader in general and specialty surgical services. Each year, more than 8,200 procedures are performed in our inpatient surgical suites. The hospital's combined inpatient and outpatient surgical volume is more than 18,000 procedures annually, which accounts for the majority of all inpatient and outpatient volume in Onondaga County.

Several innovative procedures not performed in other area facilities take place here at Crouse, including surgery on premature and critically-ill newborns. Also, Crouse's board-certified surgical specialists perform more ophthalmology, ENT (ear, nose and throat) and gynecological procedures than any other Syracuse hospital.

Although Crouse surgeons and staff have provided extraordinary service for years, our inpatient surgical suite is currently straining to meet not only their needs, but the needs of our patients and their families.

Crouse's 11 current inpatient operating rooms were completed in the early 1970s. Although state-of-the-art at the time, physical space is now extremely cramped because of the number and size of new technologies, including the latest in robotic-assisted surgery. Family waiting areas lack the space and amenities that families and friends expect.

To address community need, Crouse Hospital has mounted a capital project to renovate and expand its inpatient surgical center. This 90,000 square foot multi-level addition, known as The Chris J. and Marshia K. Witting Surgical Center, features a contemporary design and provides many benefits for Crouse patients, physicians and staff.

To defray some of the costs of this $50 million project, the Crouse Health Foundation has embarked on a $6.5 million capital campaign. The theme for the campaign is Operation: Innovation – Designed for the Surgeries of Tomorrow and a wide range of donors throughout the Greater Syracuse region have contributed to this effort.

The first phase of the Witting Surgical Center project has been completed, with 11 new operating rooms completed and opened in December 2010. In the fall of 2011, three additional ORs will open, completing the new facility.

If you'd like to make a donation, or learn more about the project, we invite you to call 315/470-7004 or e-mail Carrie Berse, president of the Crouse Health Foundation.

Prior Campaigns
The Kienzle Family Maternity Center Campaign was a $5.6 million campaign to revitalize maternity and neonatal care services at Crouse Hospital. The Marjorie D. and Lester C. Kienzle Family Maternity Center, which opened in September 1999, provides mothers-to-be and their families with the best of all worlds: compassionate, personalized care and the availability of the latest medical technology. Not only does this ensure the appropriate care for all levels of maternal and newborn patients, it utilizes the hospital's resources most cost-efficiently.

Another major accomplishment of the foundation was the $8 million capital campaign for construction of the Harry and Lillian Marley Education Center, which houses the Crouse Hospital School of Nursing, the Crouse Hospital Library, inservice and continuing education programs and community service and health education programs.

Endowment Fund

The Crouse Health Foundation Endowment Fund was established in 1983 through a $5 million community fund-drive. Today the fund has a market value of more than $20 million. The principal of the fund remains untouched, while a portion of the investment income earned annually is given to Crouse Hospital. Investment income disbursements began in 1988, and monies awarded in support of the hospital to date total more than $14.5 million.

In March 2011, the Foundation's Board of Trustees allocated $957,000 in investment income earned by the Endowment Fund in 2010, distributed through 65 grants for various programs and services of the hospital.

Planned Giving

Gifts may be given outright or structured to maximize one's financial and estate plans through our Planned Giving Program. Opportunities such as our Pooled Life Income Fund, charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests and IRA designations allow donors to plan their gifts based on personal situations; some options also provide donors with income for a term of years or life.

The Foundation can accept gifts of cash, life insurance, IRA designations and appreciated property (securities, real estate and, on a limited basis, tangible personal property).

In addition to the satisfaction received from supporting healthcare in our community, donors to the Crouse Health Foundation are eligible for income tax deductions and other tax incentives that exist under federal and state laws.

The Crouse Health Foundation staff is available to assist you with planned gifts such as bequests, annuities, trust arrangements or gifts of retirement assets. To learn more about ways to plan your gift or to request more information, please call 315/470-7004 or e-mail Carrie Berse at the Foundation office.

In-kind Donations

While unrestricted monetary gifts help the hospital most, Crouse Health Foundation accepts a variety of in-kind donations from community members.

For example, each year a dedicated volunteer knits baby caps for babies born at Christmas. A group of women from a local church crochet "lap robes," or small coverlets, for patients using our Palliative Care service.

Please contact the Foundation office at 315/470-7702, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or send us an email to inquire about making in-kind donations to Crouse.
