BRAINSTEM AUDITORY EVOKED RESPONSE (BAER)
What is the test?
The brainstem auditory evoked response test measures the response of
your auditory (hearing) nervous system to sound from your ears to the brain.
The test measures the brainstem response to a variety of sounds.
What preparation is needed?
You may eat a regular meal, but do not eat or drink anything with
caffeine in it for at least 12 hours before the test.
Your hair should be clean and free of oils, lotions, conditioners, etc.
If you wear a hearing aid, please bring it with you.
If your child is having this test, he/she may need a medication to help him/her
relax during the test. Your doctor will give you a prescription for the
medication. Bring the medications with you when you bring the child for the
test, but do not give it to him/her until directed to do so.
Where is the test done?
The Neurophysiology/EEG Department is located in the basement of the
Irving Unit at Crouse Hospital. After you have registered at the Advanced
Registration and Testing Center (room 112 of the Physician's Office Building),
you will be given specific written instructions on how to locate the department
in the hospital.
How is the test done?
A technologist will locate specific areas on your head for metal disks
(electrodes). These spots will be cleaned with a special toothpaste-like
substance . You will be made as comfortable as possible in a reclining chair.
Headphones will be placed over your ears and the technologist will present
clicking sounds to one ear at a time. Each ear will be tested twice. The ear
not being tested will have a masking or static sound. The electrical response
of your auditory nerves (hearing) will be measured and recorded on a graph. The
test is painless and takes about 30 minutes.
What can I expect after the test?
The areas where electrodes were applied will be cleaned by the
technologist, but will probably feel stiff or gritty until you have a chance to
rewash your hair. You may continue your normal activities.
