PATIENT INFORMATION:

BIOPSY (In the x-ray department)

What is the test?

A biopsy obtains a tiny sample of tissue from the body that is examined by a pathologist under a microscope. The radiologist uses x-ray, ultrasound, or CAT scan to precisely direct a very thin needle into the body.

What preparation is needed?

You will receive a telephone call from the x-ray department to discuss pre-biopsy preparation.

How is the test done?

A nurse and radiologist will discuss your biopsy with you and your immediate family or close friends. You will need to sign a consent form before the biopsy. Some patients receive sedation by pills or intravenous medication. Some patients receive intravenous contrast (dye) during the biopsy. All patients receive local anesthesia to numb the skin. The anesthetic will dull the pain but not completely eliminate the sensations associated with the biopsy. You may have to hold your breath during the biopsy and stay still in an awkward position for up to one hour.

What can I expect after the test?

1. You will spend up to 4 hours in the radiology recovery room.

2. You will be discharged with an instruction sheet once you are stable and have tolerated fluid.
