DIFFUSING CAPACITY (DLCO)
Diffusing Capacity of the Lungs for Carbon Dioxide
What is the test?
Diffusing Capacity is a measurement of the ability of your lungs to
transfer oxygen from the lungs to the blood. This test is most useful for
identifying patients with restrictive lung diseases. It may also be used to
identify the effects of certain types of drug therapies (i.e. Bleomycin,
Amiodarone).
What preparation is needed?
It is desirable that you do not smoke for 24 hours before you are to be
tested. No other preparation is needed. You should be well rested. If you are
taking any narcotic pain medications or sedatives before the test, notify the
technician; as they may alter the results. Pregnant women or anyone with
abdominal distention may have difficulty with this test. Discuss this with
your doctor first.
How is the test done?
You will be asked to inhale a gas mixture made up of Oxygen, Helium,
Nitrogen and Carbon Monoxide and hold your breath for approximately eight to
ten seconds. You will then exhale into a collection chamber. The gases you
exhale will then be analyzed to determine the rate at which you transfer oxygen
into your blood. You will be required to do this procedure at least two times.
This test is usually done in conjunction with a PFT (pulmonary function test).
PFT's with DLCO usually takes about 30-45 minutes. The therapist will be happy
to answer any questions you may have concerning the test before beginning.
What can I expect after the test?
You may return to your normal activities after the test.
