PATIENT INFORMATION:

GALLIUM SCAN

What is the test?

This test requires a total body scan after the injection of radioactive gallium. A special camera takes pictures of sites in the body where gallium is accumulated.

What preparation is needed?

You should not eat any solid food or drink fluids for at least four hours before the test.

How is the test done?

Before the study is done, you will be given an injection into the vein, of a small dose of radioactive gallium. This small amount of radioactive material is completely harmless.

The scan itself will be done 24 to 72 hours after the injection. You will be told when to return. Also, before the scan, an enema may be ordered to help clear out your bowels.

How is the test done?

A special camera will be positioned over different parts of your body to record where the gallium has localized. You will be asked to lie still while the scan is being done. It will take about 30-60 minutes to complete the scan.

What can I expect after the test?

You should have no discomfort, but you may feel tired after the test. You may return to your usual activities after the test.
