PATIENT INFORMATION:

HOLTER MONITOR TESTING

What is the test?

Sometimes an ordinary ECG (electrocardiogram) shows no abnormality, even when repeated several times. A Holter monitor allows for a continuous 24 hour recording of your ECG while you go about your normal daily routine.

What preparation is needed?

Wear comfortable, loose clothing.

How is the test done?

Electrodes are placed on your chest, then taped. The wires from the electrodes are then connected to a portable, battery-powered recorder which you will wear for a 24 hour period as you go about your normal routine.

You may be asked to keep a diary of your activity while wearing the monitor. The diary should include the time and type of activities, emotional stresses, any symptoms, and medications taken.

A carrying case will be given to you to hold the monitor while you are wearing it.

After 24 hours, you return to the cardiologist or cardiology lab where the monitor and electrodes are removed. The doctor will then be able to analyze the 24-hour recording.

What can I expect after the test?

After the test, return to your normal activity.
