I. V. P. (Intravenous Pyelogram)
What is the test?
I. V. P. is an x-ray examination to evaluate the function and structure
of the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. This test is ordered to discover the
cause of flank pain, problems with urination, or blood in the urine.
What preparation is needed?
Pre-test preparation usually includes a process to clear the colon.

FOR CHILDREN: Age 2-6
- Regular diet the day before the test.
- Clear liquids the morning of the test.
- Dulcolax Suppository 5 mg. (1/2 of the
suppository) rectally the morning of the test.
FOR CHILDREN: Age 6-16
- Regular diet the day before the test.
- Clear liquids the morning of the test.
- Dulcolax Suppository 10 mg. Rectally the
morning of the test.
FOR ADULTS (or teenagers older than 16)
- Dulcolax 5 mg. Tablets take 4 tabs between 6 and 8:00 p.m. the night before the test.
- Nothing by mouth after midnight the night before.
- No breakfast, may have 8 ounces of water only
if needed.
****Prior to the test inform the doctor if you have any allergies especially to
iodine or iodine-containing foods.****
****If you are taking medication for high blood pressure, ask your doctor if
you should stop taking the medication for the test.****
How is the test done?
You will lie on your back on the x-ray table. Preliminary x-rays will
be taken and then you will receive and intravenous contrast injection. This
may cause a brief feeling of generalized warmth and possibly a metallic taste.
Additional x-rays are taken over the next 15-90 minutes to fully examine the
urinary system.
What can I expect after the test?
You may return to normal activities and diet after the test.
