PATIENT INFORMATION:

MYELOGRAM

What is the test?

A myelogram is an x-ray test that allows the radiologist to detect abnormalities of the spine, spinal cord, or surrounding structures.

What preparation is needed?

You will receive a telephone call from the radiology department to discuss pre-test preparations.

How is the test done?

When you arrive in x-ray you will be assisted onto the x-ray table and placed flat on your stomach with pillows under your abdomen. Your feet will be secured inside special shoes. The skin on your lower back will be cleaned with a solution in the area that the needle will be inserted. You will receive an injection to numb the area before the needle is inserted. The contrast solution will be injected into the spinal canal. When the solution is in place, the table will tilt up and down and x-rays will be taken. Many patients have a CAT scan of the spine after the myelogram. This test is performed while you lie on your back. No additional injections are given during the CAT scan.

What can I expect after the test?

1. You will spend up to 4 hours in the radiology recovery room.

2. You will be given discharge instructions by the radiology nurse.
