PULMONARY FUNCTION TESTS (P. F. T.)
What is the test?
Pulmonary function testing is a series of measurements that evaluate
lung function. You may have one or more of these measurements taken depending
on what your doctor has ordered. These tests are used to determine the cause
of shortness of breath, to assess the effectiveness of specific therapy, to
determine if a functional abnormality is obstructive or restrictive, to measure
lung dysfunction, and to evaluate before surgery.
What preparation is needed?
No preparation is needed. You should be well rested, if you are taking
any narcotic pain medications or sedatives before the test, notify the
technician as they may alter the results. Pregnant women or anyone with
abdominal distention may have difficulty with this test, discuss this with your
doctor first.
****Check with your doctor about holding your bronchodilator inhalers for at
least 6 hours prior to the test.****
How is the test done?
You will be asked to breathe (in very specific ways which will be
explained to you) into a tube which is connected to a computerized analyzer.
This will measure your respiratory function. If your doctor has requested, you
may be required to inhale medication and repeat the breathing test.
Full PFT Testing takes about 1 hour. Screening tests and partial PFT's take
about 20-30 minutes.
The therapist will be happy to answer any questions you may have concerning the
test before beginning.
What can I expect after the test?
You may return to your normal activities after the test.
