SIGMOIDOSCOPY/COLONOSCOPY
What is the test?
A sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy is an examination of the large intestine
using a flexible light-guided tube which is inserted through the rectum to
determine any abnormalities or inflammation in the lower GI tract.
What preparation is needed?
You will be put on a clear liquid diet for about one day before the
test. A laxative will be ordered for the night before the exam. You may be
instructed to drink a gallon of special liquid or an enema may be ordered. An
intravenous line will be started in your arm before the test begins. Tell the
nurse if you have any allergies and what medication you are presently on. Do
not take aspirin or aspirin containing products 10 days prior to your
examination.
How is the test done?
You will be placed on a stretcher lying on your left side. The scope (a
fiberoptic tube) will be inserted through your rectum and passed into your
large intestine. The scope will be lubricated to aide in the insertion.
Because your cooperation and responses are important, it is essential that you
be awake during the test. You will be given medication through the IV to relax
you before the scope is inserted and if necessary during the test to keep you
comfortable. Air will be introduced so that your doctor can see the folds of
the lining of your intestine. As the scope is inserted, you may have the urge
to move your bowels. There will also be some crampy feeling if air is
introduced. Both of these will pass gradually when the air is expelled and the
scope removed. Otherwise, this is not a painful procedure. This test takes
15-45 minutes to complete.
What can I expect after the test?
You should have no discomfort but you may feel tired from the test. If
a biopsy is done or a polyp removed, you may have some slight bleeding. This
is usually of no consequence, but your physician will want to observe you for a
short time after the test before sending you home. Please make arrangements
for someone to accompany you to and from the hospital, as you will not be able
to drive after the test because of the IV medication you received.
