TREADMILL STRESS ECHO (ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY)
What is the test?
Stress echocardiography is a special examination that uses ultrasound waves (echo) to
image the heart and evaluate its function both at rest and with the added
"stress" of increased heart rate and blood pressure.
What preparation is needed?
You will need to be without food for 2 hours prior to the procedure. If you are
scheduled for late morning or afternoon, a light breakfast is permitted. You may take your
medications at their usual time with a small amount of water. You should come prepared to
walk on the treadmill. You will be shown how to walk on one, and if you have never used
one, the chance to try it out before the actual test begins. Please dress so you can
remove all clothing from the waist up. A cover gown will be provided. There will be skin
preparation to ensure that the EKG patches stay on while you exercise. Wear pants and
comfortable walking shoes (no slippers or clogs).
How is the test done?
After preparing the skin and attaching the electrodes, an EKG is obtained. Then an
echocardiogram is done while you are resting and the images stored. You will then be asked
to walk on a treadmill according to protocols designed to increase your heart rate and
blood pressure, making the heart work harder. Immediately following stopping the
treadmill, the echocardiogram is repeated and the images compared with those obtained at
rest. Your EKG will be continuously monitored throughout. The test should take about 20
minutes to complete, but due to the need to pre-register, attach and set up the equipment,
please plan on 2 hours for the completion of the exam from the initial check-in time.
What can I expect after the test?
You will be able to return to your normal activities after the test. You may want to
bring someone with you to drive you home, depending on your medical condition and your
ability to exercise.
