Hand-sewn, colorful quilts + 26 first-graders = heartwarming!

Students from Frazer School in the Syracuse City School District (SCSD) visited Crouse Hospital today to deliver six quilts they made for babies in the hospital's Walter R.G. Baker Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Using a grant from SCSD Foundation, Frazer teachers Caroline McAfee and MaryPat Keegan coordinated a community service project for their class. During the school year, they've been working with the first-graders, teaching them the importance of helping and caring for others and giving back to society. The students were placed in six groups, which each picked their own colors and designs. Sitting with each student in the classroom, Ms. Keegan helped them sew the quilts piece using a sewing machine she brought from home.

Kathy Costello, RN, nurse manager of the NICU, welcomed the students, explained to them what the NICU is all about and thanked them for their efforts on behalf of the babies at Crouse. The children watched a video from the hospital's website about the NICU, and enagaged in a question/answer period about what premature and ill babies experience. Phyllis Devlin, director of development for the Crouse Health Foundation, helped accept the quilts, followed by a round of applause in thanks for the teachers' leadership and the students' creativity and thoughtfulness, led by Community Outreach Manager Leesa Kelley.
