The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons offers these
possible causes of shoulder pain:
- Bursitis, an inflammation of the small fluid-filled sacs in the

- A torn tendon.
- Impingement, pressure on the soft tissues in the shoulder
applied by the top of the shoulder blade.
- A dislocation or fracture.
