- Healthcare Intervention Service (HIS)
- A hospital stay is a valuable and often-lost opportunity to identify and address chemical addiction. Crouse Hospital's Healthcare Intervention Service (HIS) identifies substance abuse problems in patients admitted to the hospital for other medical reasons.
HIS staff members use a special questionnaire to assess a patient's potential for a problem with alcohol and/or other drugs. Individual assessment, intervention and follow up services are provided.
Patient referrals are received from physicians and nursing staff. HIS works with patients and their health-care providers to make the most appropriate referral for treatment upon discharge from the hospital.
- Detoxification Program
- This program is designed for individuals who require medical services for withdrawal from alcohol and/or other substances. An interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals works with each patient to provide individual and group therapy as an introduction to treatment. Working closely with a counselor, all patients receive referral for further treatment upon discharge from the hospital.
Treatment costs are covered by most private health insurance companies and by Medicaid. A sliding-fee schedule for those without insurance coverage is available.

How to access the program
- HIS patients are identified following admission to the hospital. Detox patients are evaluated at our 410 South Crouse Ave. location during normal business hours. After hours and on weekends they are evaluated and referred to the program by hospital emergency department personnel.
