Treatment Program for Pregnant and Postpartum Women
A new chance at life

A contributing factor to Onondaga County's high infant mortality rate is that many women are chemically dependent during pregnancy. Crouse Health's Chemical Dependency Treatment Services is pleased to offer programs for pregnant and parenting women who need to explore the impact of their addiction on their lives and establish strong support for recovery. These innovative outpatient programs address this serious problem and are designed for chemically dependent pregnant and postpartum women ages 18 or older.

To meet the special needs of these women, we offer a variety of special services that are available to participants in both our intensive outpatient and continuing care programs:
  • Psychological consultations with a clinical psychologist
  • Transportation assistance
  • Case management
  • Health assessments with a registered nurse

Working with other community organizations, our comprehensive chemical dependency treatment program also addresses the special needs of program participants, including:
  • Parenting issues
  • Domestic violence
  • Nutrition

We offer individual and group therapy and education in a safe and supportive environment and work hard to help new mothers develop healthy relationships with their children.

Group and individual aftercare services are also part of the program; and daycare services are provided.

Sliding-fee scale, Medicaid and other insurances accepted.

Residential treatment and referral services for pregnant women are also available at Commonwealth Place.

Treatment for Developmentally Challenged and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

Helping developmentally challenged and hard-of-hearing individuals work toward recovery requires an awareness of, and sensitivity to, their special circumstances. Both of these adult outpatient programs provide a modified, 12-step multidisciplinary approach for those with special needs who are chemically dependent.

We offer group, individual and family sessions and make referrals to appropriate community agencies (hard-of-hearing individuals, for example, are referred to Alcoholics and/or Narcotics Anonymous deaf and sober meetings). Group and individual aftercare sessions are available for participants of both programs. Sign interpreters are available.

Treatment costs are covered by most private health insurance companies and by Medicaid. A sliding-fee schedule for those without insurance coverage is available.

Treatment for Latinos

This outpatient program provides Spanish-speaking members of our community with group and individual counseling in a healthy, recovery-oriented environment. Our counselors strive to reinforce values, norms and beliefs from a cultural perspective, helping participants to make appropriate choices and become accountable for their own behavior.

Aftercare services are offered and referrals to other support agencies that work with Spanish-speaking individuals are made when appropriate. We also conduct DWI evaluations for this population.

Treatment for HIV-Positive Individuals

Designed to meet the needs of chemically dependent adults living with a diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS, this group supplements our existing programs. The group also provides an opportunity for support to individuals who are not currently receiving treatment for chemical dependency.

The group focuses on strategies to maintain abstinence while coping with the challenges of a terminal disease. Admissions requirements include a diagnosis of chemical dependency as abuse and diagnosis of HIV infection or AIDS. Patients must be at least 18 years of age.
