From infant to adolescents, Crouse Hospital provides a wide range of inpatient (in-hospital) care and educational services specially designed for children. The Pediatric Unit, housed on the 5th floor of the hospital’s Memorial Unit, provides complete healthcare for children.Same Day Admission Program
At Crouse Hospital, we know that you and your child feel better when you’re home. When your child needs hospitalization, we strive to make it as stress-free as possible for you and your child. That’s why Crouse Hospital arranges for most children to be admitted to the hospital the day of the surgery or procedure, instead of requiring the child to be hospitalized the day before. (Occasionally, children with particular medical requirements may need to be hospitalized the day before surgery, but the vast majority of our scheduled pediatric surgical patients are admitted the day of the procedure).
Qualified Staff Will Care for Your Child
A wide range of medical, nursing and social service professionals, as well as professional tutors/teachers, staff our pediatric area. Each of them approaches every patient with sensitivity to their physical and emotional condition, as well as their background, cultural and educational levels.
Members of our nursing staff maintain the highest standards of excellence through membership in numerous professional pediatric nursing associates, including the Society of Pediatric Nurses and others. The majority of our pediatric nurses are certified in pediatrics by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANNC), a national nursing organization. We also have a pediatric clinical nurse specialist who is available to you on the unit as a resource, educator and psychosocial support. All nurses are PALS (Pediatric Advance Life Support) certified.
Visiting the Pediatric Unit:
To make our young patients as comfortable as possible, visiting hours for parents are unlimited. Visiting for other relatives and friends are from 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. Patients are expected to be ready for bed by 10 p.m. One parent is able to stay with his/her child, with the other parent at home or in the lounge. We ask that all visitors be properly immunized for the safety and health of our patients. Young visitors must be supervised.
Tours of the unit can be arranged in advance of scheduled hospitalizations and are encouraged as a way to allay fears for children.
We have a playroom staffed by a child life specialist and volunteers.
