About The DepartmentOur new chest pain observation unit, which is part of our 40 Bed Coronary Care Unit is designed for patients with chest pain who require additional observation, telemetry monitoring and nursing care. The unit is located on 4 North Irving. Patients appropriate for the unit will be brought in as outpatients.
Our PhilosophyThis unit is a specialized area for those patients needing additional evaluation of their chest pain. While most patients will be discharged within 24 hours, some may need to stay longer. They will be carefully monitored to determine if admission to an inpatient unit is necessary.
The goal of this unit is to provide cardiac patients with a quiet place for observation during what can be a very stressful time. Removed from the hustle and bustle of the emergency department, patients in our chest pain observation unit receive necessary medical attention with their families by their side, if desired, along with a television and telephone.

Admissions ProceduresPatients can be entered into the unit from the emergency department once they've been evaluated by a physician and deemed appropriate for the unit. Patients can also be directly sent to the unit from a physician's office after being evaluated by their physician.
Being DischargedPatients will be discharged from the unit within a 24-hour period. The attending physician will not need to be present when patients are discharged from the unit to home, but will need to provide discharge criteria and a signed order to the unit staff before the patient leaves the hospital. If the patient is unable to be discharged home and meets the criteria for admission, the usual hospital admission procedure will be followed.
