Opened in April 2000, Crouse Hospital's state-of-the-art Cardiac Care Center houses five departments within one diagnostic and testing center in nearly 20,000 square feet of space:
- Electrocardiography
- Echocardiography
- Adult Catheterizations
- Pediatric Catheterizations
- Electrophysiology
It is the newest, most state-of-the-art facility in Central New York.
Aside from the obvious aesthetic and technological benefits of the new center – it provides a convenient, spacious, centralized location for all cardiac care needs for patients, their families and physicians.
Joseph Battaglia, MD is the Medical Director for all Cardiac Services.
Adult and Pediatric Catheterizations
Catheterization procedures include diagnostic tests and interventions to determine the following:
- Extent of a patient’s coronary artery disease (clogging of arteries);
- The best treatment method*;
- To treat myocardial infarctions (heart attack), and
- To treat patients with chest pain patients.
* Balloon angioplasty is very commonly used to treat coronary artery disease. In fact, it is the preferred method of treatment for patients presenting with heart attack symptoms in an emergency room setting.
Angioplasty opens up an artery by inflation of a balloon in the artery.
A variation of the angioplasty includes adding a stent, which is the insertion of a small metal device (much like a garden hose) inside the artery to keep it open.
Hospital staff recently completed participation in an FDA clinical trial using beta radiation during angioplasty – which proved very successful nationwide.
Each year Crouse Hospital performs over 2800 adult procedures and 150 pediatric procedures.
Crouse Hospital offers the only pediatric catheterizations in Central New York.
Crouse Hospital has offered catheterization services since 1980.
Joseph Battaglia, MD is Medical Director for Adult Catheterization.
Craig Byrum, MD is Medical Director for Pediatric Catheterization.
Eectrocardiography
Electrocardiography (ECG) is the testing and documentation of the rhythm of the heart to determine the existence of different heart conditions such as coronary artery disease and heart defects.
Crouse Hospital performs more than 25,000 ECG tests annually.
James Longo, MD is Medical Director of Electrocardiography.
Echocardiography
Echocardiography is ultrasound testing of the heart to determine the existence of different heart conditions such as coronary artery disease and/or heart valve defects.
Crouse Hospital performs more than nearly 4000 Echocardiography procedures annually.
This department also provides stress-testing(treadmill).
Echocardiography has the most state-of-the-art facility in Central New York with the latest digital technology.
Anis Obeid, MD is Medical Director of Echocardiography
Electrophysiology
Electrophysiology (EP) is the testing of the electrical system of the heart to diagnose and determine the best treatment of different cardiac disorders related to the electrical function of the heart. style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It also includes the insertion of pacemakers and implantable cardiac defibrillators.
Crouse Hospital initiated this service in 1998. It is one of the most rapidly growing fields in cardiology.
An average EP test takes from three to six hours.
Crouse Hospital currently performs more than 400 EP tests per year and more than 400 Pacemaker and Cardiac Defibrillator Impacts per year.
Boahene Kwabena, MD is the Medical Director.
