The Employee Assistance Professional Association has standards and guidelines that define core ingredients of Employee Assistance Programs. One standard for organizational leadership is as follows:

"The Employee Assistance Program shall provide training for organization leadership to communicate program purpose and procedures and to explain their role in the program."

Essential components of this training/education are:

• Recognizing the impact of employee problems on job performance and the management of troubled employees
• Learning how to use HelpPeople EAP when the supervisor needs assistance with recognizing job issues and overcoming barriers to confronting the employee
• Understanding the relationship of HelpPeople EAP to personnel actions including confidentiality and other regulatory requirements
