HelpPeople is just one service within a comprehensive wellness program. As more employers have
moved to consumer-driven health plans, developing wellness programs is a cornerstone of this change.
Employers can link employees with health promotion services. Learning how to cope with family and
work stress is then an individual responsibility. According to David L. Snow, Ph.D. (2004)*,
Stressful conditions, if not effectively addressed, can contribute to depression, anxiety,
substance abuse, and physical health problems. These psychological and physical health
problems are costly to companies in terms of absenteeism, decreased productivity, and
associated medical expenses. In addition, these conditions are detrimental to the individual
and his or her family in terms of reduced adaptability and lowered sense of satisfaction and
well being. The effective reduction or management of stress at home and at work will therefore
increase job effectiveness and individual health. Furthermore, increased communication skills
and expanded abilities to resolve conflict will contribute to improved working relationships
among coworkers and supervisors and better relationships at home.
