Meet Our Team

Crouse SportsMedicine features the region’s leading board-certified sports medicine experts. They treat athletes of all ages and levels of competition, from adolescence to high school, college, professional and adult recreational athletes with an emphasis in arthroscopic surgery of knees, shoulders, hips and ankles, as well as concussion diagnosis and treatment.


Daniel DiChristina Daniel DiChristina, MD
Head Team Physician – Syracuse Crunch
Partner – Orthopedics East

A partner with Michael Wiese, MD, in Orthopedics East, Dr. DiChristina has served as head team physician for the Syracuse Crunch hockey team since 1994. His surgical specialty areas include fracture care and all aspects of sports medicine.

 Board-certified in orthopedics, Dr. Dichristina earned his medical degree at SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse in 1983, and completed his residency in orthopedics at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, PA, in 1987. He completed a trauma fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital in Pennsylvania and a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Birmingham in 1993.

Dr. Dichristina’s hobbies include youth hockey, baseball and golf. A native of Chittenango, his office is located at 183 Intrepid Lane.


Irving Raphael 

Irving Raphael, MD
Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists 

Dr. Raphael established Raphael Sports Medicine over 30 years ago on the heels of his collegiate career, during which he earned 12 varsity letters. He attended medical school at Yale and completed his orthopedic residency at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Dr. Raphael has been the head team physician for Syracuse University for nearly two decades and is a senior partner in Raphael Sports Medicine in Syracuse. He is also an orthopedic consultant to the NCAA, NBA, NFL and the PGA and serves as team physician for Cazenovia College and several local high schools.

Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the International Arthroscopy Association.

Dr. Raphael lectures frequently on issues related to sports medicine and student athletes. He primarily treats injuries to athletes and specializes in arthroscopic and ligament reconstructive surgery of the shoulder, hip, knee and ankle.



Bradley Raphael, MD
Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists 

Dr. Raphael graduated from Yale Medical School in 2005 and completed a surgical internship at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center, followed by an orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery, also in New York City. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at Kerlan Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles and served as assistant team physician for a number of teams, including the LA Dodgers, Angels, Lakers and Kings, as well as the Anaheim Ducks.


Whether you're a Little League baseball player, a basketball weekend warrior, or a PGA golfer, Dr. Raphael recognizes each patient's specific needs, creating a personalized treatment plan tailored to those unique requirements. His mission is to identify his patients' expectations, and then surpass them so they can get back into the game to play at their peak performance level.

Dr. Raphael’s interests include SU sports, travel, lacrosse and spending time with family.

Klawitter 2 Paul Klawitter, MD
Crouse Concussion Care Program

Dr. Klawitter has nearly 20 years experience in the medical field and is board-certified in both primary care sports medicine and emergency medicine. He most recently worked with Ithaca Orthopaedic Group. Dr. Klawitter’s sports medicine interests include musculoskeletal care, concussion management, musculoskeletal ultrasound and ultrasound guided injections, exercise physiology and return-to-play decisions.

Dr. Klawitter earned his medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, where he completed his residency in emergency medicine. He earned a PhD in Biophysics from The Ohio State University, where his research included the study of the role of free radicals in muscle fatigue. He completed his primary care sports medicine fellowship at SUNY Buffalo. While there, he was assistant team physician for all of the SUNY Buffalo sports teams. During his tenure with Ithaca Orthopaedic Group, he served as team physician for the Cornell men’s soccer team.

Dr. Klawitter is a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and holds a certificate of advanced qualification in primary sports medicine from the American Board of Family Medicine. He is a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine. In his free time, Dr. Klawitter likes to run, play guitar, canoe and hike with his family, and coach his son’s hockey team.

 Michael Wiess

Michael Wiese, MD
Partner – Orthopedics East

 A partner with Daniel DiChristina, MD, in Orthopedics East, Dr. Wiese serves as orthopedic consultant to Christian Brothers Academy, Le Moyne College and the Syracuse Crunch hockey team. Board-certified in orthopedics, Dr. Wiese earned his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School in 1985 and completed his residency at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center in 1992 and internship at Washington Hospital Center in 1986. A native of Rochester, Dr. Wiese’s hobbies include fishing, gardening and boating. His office is located at 183 Intrepid Lane in Syracuse.
