Educational Partnerships

In 2008, Crouse Hospital was proud to receive the Syracuse City School District Foundation’s Community Partnership Award for our work with the district and, in particular, the Hughes Magnet Elementary School. More recently, we are honored to be the first Central New York hospital to work with the Say Yes to Education and Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection programs, both of which are essential to the continued growth and prosperity of our community.

Health is Hoppin’ at Hughes
Statistics show that one-third of American children are obese or at risk of becoming so. To fight this epidemic on a local level, Crouse Hospital partners with Hughes Magnet Elementary School. Our staff serve as wellness advisors and provide support for the school’s health and wellness initiatives for students, staff and parents, including health speakers and special events.

Say Yes to Education
Crouse Hospital provides leadership support and health expertise for the Syracuse Say Yes to Education initiative. Syracuse University and the Syracuse City School District have joined forces to develop and launch this first district-wide program that will promote lifelong success for Syracuse school district students and their families by dramatically increasing both high school and college graduation rates. Crouse is the first hospital member of the Say Yes to Education Higher Education Compact and will provide two student scholarships annually to the Pomeroy College of Nursing at Crouse Hospital.

Syracuse City School District Health Careers Programs
To support our community’s commitment to youth education, Crouse Hospital offers a six-week program includes tours for high-school students looking at possible hospital career paths.

Educational and Career School Programs
Crouse provides clinical staff to speak at schools throughout Onondaga County on health-related careers. We also organize an annual afternoon teacher training at the hospital, giving teachers and guidance counselors first-hand exposure to the types of jobs they discuss with their students. To arrange for a Crouse healthcare provider to speak to your students about a health topic or career, call 315-470-5727.

Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection
Crouse Hospital is the first Onondaga County hospital to partner as a participating employer with the Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection, which aims to keep at-risk teens in high school of by providing one-on-one mentoring, life/social skills training and employment opportunities. In 2009, Hillside served nearly 500 Syracuse City School District students in grades 7-12, with 89 percent of those students promoted to the next grade level.
