TMJ Disorder Rehabilitation

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) are disorders of the temporomadibular joint (TMJ) and the muscles surrounding it. It is also referred to as a craniomandibular problem since the neck (cervical spine) is often involved as well. There are many symptoms that go along with TMD. A person may have one or several of the common symptoms. For this reason, it is often difficult to properly diagnose this condition. The most common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the jaw, ear or face
  • Headache and neck pain
  • Clicking or popping in the jaw
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or yawning
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing in the ears

Symptoms can range from a mild annoyance to extreme severity.

At Crouse, our specially trained physical therapist holds a certification in Craniofacial and will work with you to create an individualized rehabilitation program to reduce pain, increase mobility and improve your comfort. Treatment always begins with a thorough evaluation of the jaw and neck. Your individualized treatment sessions include education about what may be causing your problem and how you can prevent it.

Under her careful guidance, a wide range of exercises and treatment techniques are tailored to meet your specific needs and help you reach your goals.

Treatments may include:

  • Manual therapy for the jaw and neck
  • Instruction to correct postural alignment along with postural exercises
  • Rocabado and other specific TMJ exercises
  • Soft tissue and joint mobilizations
  • Education in preventive measures and self-care strategies
  • Modalities such as heat/ice
