Facility Fee Notification

New York State Law (PHL § 2830) requires hospitals to notify patients about potential facility fees that may not be covered by insurance. Facility fees are billed by hospitals and provide compensation for operating expenses and resources including supplies, equipment and use of hospital space. They are billed separately from professional fees.

The services you receive may include facility fees if you are hospitalized or receive outpatient care. This includes care provided in the emergency department and in outpatient hospital clinics. Healthcare services and clinics associated with Crouse Health that may bill for facility fees are listed below:

  • All services provided at Crouse Hospital
  • Crouse Breast Center
  • Crouse Cardiac Center
  • Crouse Imaging Center
  • Crouse Physical Therapy
  • Crouse Testing Center
  • Commonwealth Place
  • Madison Irving Surgical Center
  • POB Surgical Center
  • Pomeroy Treatment Center
  • Sunny B Wound Care Center

Facility fees are not new and there is no change to how they are billed. Facility fees are billed to your insurance and would be included on your billing statement for any balance you may be responsible for. This means you may receive two separate bills – one with the facility fees and another with the professional fees.

You may be billed for facility fee charges that include:

  • Use of exam or surgery rooms
  • X-rays and other diagnostic tests
  • Services provided by technicians, nurses, or other members of your healthcare team
  • Room charges for an inpatient stay
  • Any other charges that are not professional fees for the services of licensed healthcare practitioners, such as physicians or advanced practice providers

Note: Facility fees will not be charged for preventative services as defined by the United States Preventative Task Force

The facility fees you may be responsible for out-of-pocket will depend on your insurance coverage and benefits. You can contact your insurance company directly to obtain additional information specific to your plan.
