DAISY Award Honors Nurse from Oncology Unit

DAISY recipient Trevor Tompkins

Trevor Tompkins, RN, from 4 South Irving Unit is the latest recipient of the DAISY award, nominated by a nurse practitioner for his consistent care and compassion of patients.

“Trevor is a nurse who exhibits those traits of many past DAISY winners,” the nomination said.

Patients will often comment on how supportive Trevor is during difficult times and how they think of him as family.

The nomination described one particular example of Trevor’s kindness and commitment to his patients during a warm, sunny spring day in Syracuse.

A patient who had been admitted a few weeks prior was bedbound, having difficulty with pain, and it was unknown if she would ever be able to leave the hospital, let alone feel the warm sun on her face again.

A suggestion was made to take her to the Pomeroy Patient Patio. Trevor swung into action and within a short time the patient and her family were outside, enjoying a beautiful day. Despite being in a hospital bed, bound by oxygen and multiple tubes, Trevor was able to provide a ray of sunshine to this patient and her family.

“I am sure many of Trevor’s coworkers could share countless other stories of how he bettered the hospital experience for many of our patients,” the nomination read.

Thank you, Trevor, for living the Crouse mission, vision and values each and every day.

Chief Nursing Officer Betty O’Connor, left, and Nurse Manager Colleen Phinney presented Trevor with his award.

About the DAISY Award
In November 1999, the family of J. Patrick Barnes formed the DAISY Foundation as a way to express their profound gratitude to nurses for the work they do for patients and their families every day. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Pat died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. In 2015, Crouse became a DAISY-affiliated hospital, and presents an award to a deserving nurse, selected by a committee, regularly throughout the year. The DAISY Award program at Crouse has been made possible through a donation from the Crouse Hospital Medical Staff.
